September 2018 - part 1
1st September 2018 - (Saturday, Szombat)
3rd September 2018 - (Monday, Hétfő)
An afternoon visit on another warm day, but without the direct sun of recent days. In fact, while I was on-site I had to shelter from a fairly heavy shower. Still not enough to do any real good, though. Butterflies seen were: Small Heath (several), Sooty Copper, Adonis Blue (male), Chalkhill Blue (2 males), Silver-washed Fritillary (female), Common Blue (female), Dingy Skipper, Short-tailed Blue (female), Small White, False Grayling (about 6 seen), and Great Banded Grayling (about 6 seen) = 11 species.
4th September 2018 - (Tuesday, Kedd)
At 23 degrees it was a cooler day, although, at times, it didn't feel much cooler. The morning had been dull with a few showers, and it was much the same when I visited the SQ during the afternoon. In fact, from about 1700 until 1725 I took shelter from a prolonged shower inside the SQHQ. Whilst inside, I checked the Barn Swallow nest and found that it was on the floor, possibly knocked down by a human presence, as I also found an empty cigarette packet in the main room. I think the nest was knocked down after the young had left. Not too many butterfly species seen: Short-tailed Blue (female), Small Heath (4 seen), Common Blue, Chalkhill Blue (both sexes), False Grayling (6 seen), and Small White = 6 species. It looked like someone had also decided to further vandalise the brickwork on the edges of the main steps.
5th September 2018 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
6th September 2018 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
Some large clouds moved slowly across the sky, meaning that most of my afternoon visit occurred in cooler temperatures. Thius had an effect on the butterflies as not too many species were seen, although things improved once I found today's 'hot pot' ... the grassy area next to the houses. One of those seen resembled a Brown Argus, and yet it has a spot in the cell, which is not a BA trait. I await official identification for this specimen. Those I HAVE identified are: Common Blue, Small Heath, Sooty Copper, Wood White, Short-tailed Blue (female), Small White, and Silver-spotted Skipper = 7.
7th September 2018 - (Friday, Péntek)
As I drove up the hill, I saw something black on the road. Driving past slowly, I saw that it was actually a single black shoe ! A subsequent search of the site didn't provide the other shoe, and there was no sign of Cinderella either! I entered the site via the metal gates, and was soon joined by small groups of Chiffchaff and Blue Tit. Butterflies noted were: Meadow Brown, Sooty Copper, Common Blue, Adonis blue (male), Silver-washed Fritillary (female), Small White, Small Heath, Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow, Great Banded Grayling, False Grayling, Grizzled Skipper, and Chalkhill Blue (male) = 12 species.
8th September 2018 - (Saturday, Szombat)
Another mainly sunny afternoon. The Purple Loosestrife continues to host butterflies, but could really do with some help in the form of a prolonged rainy spell. Butterflies seen: Green-veined White, Small Heath (several), Reverdin's Blue, Common Blue, Chalkhill Blue ( 3 male, 1 female), Small White, Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow (3 seen), Adonis Blue (6 males seen, 2 in The Bowl), Sooty Copper (female), Meadow Brown, and Great Banded Grayling = 11 species.
9th September 2018 - (Sunday, Vasárnap)
Another sunny, late afternoon visit. Butterflies recorded: Small Heath, Common Blue, Small White (several, including one courting - or non-courting - couple), Sooty Copper (female), Reverdin's Blue, Chalkhill Blue, Wall Brown, False Grayling, Meadow Brown, Large Wall Brown, Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow, and Great Banded Grayling = 12 species.
10th September 2018 - (Monday, Hétfő)
I was only on-site for just over an hour, but I saw an impressive number of butterfly species during that time: Small Heath, Chalkhill Blue, Common Blue, Grizzled Skipper, Adonis Blue (1 male), False Grayling, Small White (mating pair), Reverdin's Blue, Sooty Copper, Small Copper, Short-tailed Blue (male), Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow, Wall Brown, Wood White, and Great Banded Grayling = 15 species. All were within the SQ site itself.
