January 2019
2nd January 2019 - (Wednesday, Szerda )
My first visit of the year to the SQ. There were a few patches left from the recent light snowfall, mainly on the sheltered pathways. Rock Baths 1 and 2 both contained water. There was also some ice-topped water in The Bowl, with about half of the Coffee Pool being formed. I heard the calls of a Bullfinch, and saw a small flock of Long-tailed Tit. A pair of Buzzards were seen flying fairly low over the adjacent vineyards.
6th December 2019 - (Sunday, Vasárnap)
Yesterday, we had about 10 cms of snow fall, so I went up to the SQ this morning to see the sights ! It was a sunny, blue sky day, which gave some lovely snowy views. The only wildlife noted: Green Woodpecker (heard), Great Tit (seen). There were, however, several deer footprints inside the site, some quite large and could therefore be Red Deer. A downside to my photography: I appear to have loads of debris inside my Canon camera, meaning that the sensor and other parts must be cleaned. Time to revert to the trusty old Nikon, I believe !
14th January 2019 - (Monday, Hétfő)
Although the recent snow is still very much in evidence, today has seen a rise in temperature causing a steady thaw. I went to the SQ to record the wintery scenes. It was amazing how many footprints I found. The first, where I park the car, were those of a Pheasant, accompanied by the large prints of a Red Deer. Inside the site I found lots of deer footprints, both Red and Roe. There were no wildlife sightings today, but water had accumulated in The Bowl, in the reedbed area, and it looked like the deer had made holes in the surface ice of Rock Baths 1 and 2 in order to reach some drinking water.
17th January 2019 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
There had been a considerable rise in temperature today, so, this afternoon I paid a visit to the SQ to see what the situation was. On arrival, I could see that meltwater was running down the airfield road and turning left into our top irrigation channel. Stepping inside the site I found a small waterfall in action. Further exploration revealed water in the reedbed area, and all three Rock Baths. A Jay and a female Blackbird were the only wildlife species observed, although the whole site was covered in the footprints of deer.
25th January 2019 - (Friday, Péntek)
An afternoon visit to check the site after yet more snow. At the moment we are in a cycle of snow, thaw, snow, thaw, snow. Only bird seen was a Jay, but there were plenty of deer footprints again.
30th January 2019 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
We're still in this cycle of snow, thaw, snow, thaw. Most of the deer footprints had almost been obscured by the recent fall of soft snow.
