October 2019
4th October 2019 - (Friday, Péntek )
My first visit to the SQ and its surrounds since 18th September, due to a fine bout of flu. I spent most of the time checking out the adjacent military area. Teréz had discovered a few days ago that some substantial work had been carried out, including the removal of our barrier from the 'red light track'. Sure enough, a great swaythe had been cut from my usual parking place, through the green metal gates, and right down the butterfly track to the farthest red and white-roofed building. From there, an exit or entrance track had been cut to the airfield road. Much of the work had been done by a large digger as a vast amount of soil, vegetation, and rock had been shifted. My guess is that this work is linked to next week's military exercise which will feature helicopters from Szolnok air base. I also suspect that some military vehicles will rumble around this newly-cut track, and that soldiers will train amongst the buildings. We must wait to see! Inside the SQ, I found some water in Rock Bath 1, but the reedbed area appeared to be dry. I found one butterfly: a Green-veined White.
6th October 2019 - (Sunday, Vasárnap)
More rain yesterday so RB1 had an increased depth of water. Nothing seen in the reedbed area, though.
22nd October 2019 - (Tuesday, Kedd)
Another very warm day. As I arrived, two immature Pheasants were running up the road in front of me. I stopped the car so that No. 2 could cross the road and into cover. A few plant species were still in flower. There was still some water in Rock Bath 1. Butterflies seen were: Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow (2), and a Common Blue (male). The biggest surprise of the day was when I neared the rock wall area. A juvenile Grass Snake was basking on the large, flat rock that can be seen on the 4th row of these photos. Unfortunately, it saw me before I saw it, and I was in mid-step at the time. It speedily slipped off the rock and into cover before it could be photographed.
