June 2016 - part 2
11th June 2016 - (Saturday, Szombat)
A mixture of sun and cloud for our morning visit, coupled with the usual wind that made plants and insects drift in and out of focus ! Even so, we were able to 'capture' some super butterflies, including: Adonis Blue, Common Blue, Silver-studded Blue, Pearly Heath, Small Heath, Essex Skipper, Small Skipper, Eastern Bath White, Comma, Sloe Hairstreak, Purple-shot Copper, as well as the first examples of 2016 of the Woodland Grayling and the superb Meleager's Blue (male).
Here are the images from Teréz's camera for the same day (11th June 2016). She was with me during the daytime visit, but then returned alone after 2000 to check whether the waterfall was in action following some heavy rainfall:
14th June 2016 - (Tuesday, Kedd)
A late afternoon visit has provided us with one new spider species, and possibly one more, and also a new beetle species. Adonis Blue and Purple-shot Copper males were in evidence, and the first Marbled White of 2016 put in an appearance, but could not be photographed. There were several Essex Skippers seen, and maybe a few Small, but the photos need careful examination ! Not much water remained in The Bowl, but Rock Bath 1 is still holding firm with its water level.
15th June 2016 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
As there was a torrential downpour in Gyöngyös this morning, I decided to pay a short visit to the SQ to check whether there had been a similar downpour in the Pipis-hegy area. Upon arrival, I was pleased to see water running down the road and into our top irrigation channel. From inside the top entrance I could see that a small but vigorous waterfall was doing its job. There was no further examination of the site as I was only in sandals ! As I write these words at 1430, the sun has come from behind the cloud, but at least a fair amount of water has entered the site. Hopefully, most of the tadpoles (ebihalak) will be able to complete their development.
16th June 2016 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
Back to sunshine today, but I thought I'd visit to see what effect yesterday's heavy rain has had on our on-going water saga. I was pleased to see that the reedbed area of The Bowl has been topped-up nicely, as has Rock Bath 1, and even RB2 has some water in it. Several butterfly species were active, but I missed taking photos of the following: Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow, Eastern Bath White, an unidentified Fritillary, and a Hungarian Glider (with its one white band). Even so, I managed to capture: a superb female Meleager's Blue, a female Adonis Blue, Blue-spot Hairstreak, Sloe Hairstreak, all 3 Heath species, plus Common Blue and Silver-studded Blue. There also seems to be a new species of Tortracid moth (still to be identified). A type of reddish darter dragonfly was also seen, but it didn't land.
Teréz's early evening visit on the same day (16th June 2016) produced this photographic record:
