October 2017 - part 2
17th October 2017
My visit took place on a warm and sunny afternoon. Not too many butterfly species around, but I did record Common Blue and Small Copper, and 3 or 4 Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow kept flying to and fro, but not stopping for photographs ! A single Praying Mantis was seen, on the pathway of the top rim of the site. A selection of bug species were found on the Hog's Fennel, also up there. A sad finding was a dead adult Fox ... no idea how it died, but it may have been shot. A small flock of Chiffchaff were seen, and a Great Spotted Woodpecker played hide and seek in a tree top.

We had several hours of heavy rain this morning, and so, Teréz and I paid a visit to the site duirng the afternoon to check on the water situation. I was convinced that there'd be a waterfall in action. Sadly, I was disappointed as, after many months of inactivity, it seems that our SQ nemesis, Achim, had swung into action again as our top irrigation channel had been blocked in three places. This meant that the majority of the rainfall had surged past the site and down the airfield road. We left the channel blocked as the sky had turned blue, and we didn't have any tools with us, anyway. Apart from that, there was a very cold gale-force wind blowing across the site from the west, so it wasn't a day to stand still for long. Rock Bath 1 had quite a lot of water, as did RB2 and RB3, and there several large puddles at the usual points across the site. There were signs of water in The Bowl. This had come from the rainfall itself, and possibly, the waterfall before Achim intervened.
