June 2016 - part 1
1st June 2016 - (Wednesday, Szerda)

2nd June 2016 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
Today was mostly overcast, and a little rain fell on the SQ, although not as much as 7 kilometres to the south. There were not too many butterfly species about, and, due to the cooler conditions, I was able to capture most 'on film'. I left the site with some light rain falling, but ... as always .... we need much more. At least we didn't have hot sun causing the water to evaporate today.

3rd June 2016 - (Friday, Péntek)
A Green Tree Frog called from near the HQ, but no 'real' rain fell, despite very heavy thundery downpours in Gyöngyös.

4th June 2016 - (Saturday, Szombat)
Again, a Green Tree Frog called from near the HQ, but the grey clouds just kept passing by. Butterfly species No. 85 was recorded today: a Small Tortoiseshell - Aglais urticae - Kis rókalepke. We'd been waiting for this species to appear since 2008 ! A Red Admiral made a fly-past, but did not stop to be photographed.

5th June 2016 - (Sunday, Vasárnap)
A magnificent day for our visit, made especially so be those amazing Adonis Blues. We were already happy to find such a stunning male, but were then knocked-out by the colours of the female. Further excitement was added by the first Eastern Bath White of the year, and the brilliant red of the 'panelled' Burnet moth.

6th June 2016 - (Monday, Hétfő)
I was on-site from 1515 until 1730, and there were lots of species to record, as can be seen from this photographic record. The downside was the strong, gusty wind that proved 'troublesome' every time I tried to photograph insects on plants. The star species to elude the camera was the male Large Copper ... he simply refused to rest anywhere ! Of the butterflies I DID photograph, two are causing me a little problem. I thought that both were Oberthur's Grizzled Skipper, but I'm also wondering if one, or both, are Safflower Skipper. Both species have been recorded in the SQ before, but I really needed to photograph the undersides, and neither of them was co-operative. Another mainly hot day, and therefore, the water level in The Bowl continues to drop.

8th June 2016 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
The first butterflies on my Wednesday afternoon visit couldn't wait to see me: they appeared as I was walking past the irrigation channel and approaching the top entrance ! It was a pair of Sloe Hairstreak, and they were, as usual, carrying out their courtship dance on and around the flower heads of Yarrow. Inside the site I found Black Hairstreak, Essex Skipper, Sooty Copper, Glanville Fritillary, Meadow Brown, Small Heath, Pearly Heath, Common Blue, Silver-studded Blue, and the first Comma of the year. It was, however, very much 'Adonis day' again, with about 3 of each gender being seen and photographed. On a separate visit (photos to follow), Teréz photographed the first Blue-spot Hairstreak of 2016.
