August 2022
24th August 2022 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
After what seemed a lifetime of blue skies, blazing sun, and temperatures around the 36 degree mark, we finally had some thunderstorms and substantial rain over the weekend. Even so, I expected the SQ to be yellow, dry, and devoid of life. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find several plant species in flower, and the place was greener than I'd imagined. There were certainly more butterflies than I'd expected: Silver-washed Fritillary (including one Valesina female), Meadow Brown, Chestnut Heath, Small Heath, Chalkhill Blue (male and females), Silver-studded Blue (female), Sooty Copper (female), Lesser Fiery Copper (male), False Grayling, Great Banded Grayling, Woodland Grayling, and Dryad = 12 species. NOTE: I have some checking to do because I may have found a new plant species, and also a Leaf-cutter Bee ... with section of leaf in its clutches !
