June 2023
1st June 2023 - (Thursday, Csütörtök..)
It seems strange to be talking of a full Bowl on the first day of June, as we've spent many of the last few years bemoaning the fact that The Bowl is dry. However, we've had several rainy days recently, some of them with dramatic thunderstorms. Teréz and others have ensured that the top irrigation channel has been functioning, despite occasional interference from 'you know who'. Around 10 Fire-bellied Toads were calling today, but I couldn't see them as they were all in the reedbed.

22nd June 2023 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
Hot and sunny for my visit. Although the water level in The Bowl had dropped a little, there is still a good amount in there .. so no panic yet ! The butterflies were very active today, so not too many were photographed, but species recorded were: Small Heath, Large Blue (male), several Sloe Hairstreak, Large White, Meadow Brown, Blue-spot Hairstreak, and a few Marbled White = 7 species, plus one Fritillary that couldn't be identified. No Fire-bellied Toads calling today, but there were hordes of Common Spadefoot Toad tadpoles coming up for air. There was a great panic from them as a 50 cm Grass Snake swam across the water towards me. A lot of Odonata activity, including hunting, battling, and egg-laying. One red damsel was also too quick for me, and so no identification was possible. Two Bush-cricket species need to be identified.

Notes: Male Brimstone, 2 Grass Snakes, Odonata to be identified, Bush Cricket to be identified. Hot, sunny, but 'single' clouds kept crossing the sun causing exposure headaches for photography.
