November 2023
8th November 2023 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
A quick visit to check the site following last night's thunderstorm and heavy rain. My visit was in the sunshine, but water was still running down the airfield road... and into the SQ ! One juvenile Green Lizard was seen.
14th November 2023 - (Tuesday, Kedd)
A quick visit to the site by Teréz Udvarhelyi ..... and all images were taken by her.
16th November 2023 - (Thursday, Csütörtök)
My own 'quick visit' to check the water level after some more prolonged rainfall. At the base of the 'skinny' Tree of Heaven, a late Darter dragonfly was basking in the warm sunshine. Unfortunately, it can't be positively identified from my photos. Water was still running down the road and into the site.
22nd November 2023 - (Wednesday, Szerda)
After a quick look at the airfield, I debated whether to stop at the SQ or not. I finally decided to stop as it was such a sunny afternoon. It was a good thing that I did as I discovered approximately 30 Southern Darter dragonflies (Sympetrum meridonale), some of them as mated pairs. None of the mated pairs were resting on vegetation ... all of them were resting on the warm volcanic rocks. I'm not sure if this a characteristic feature of this species. My next query is: where did they all come from? Perhaps they moved up from southern Hungary and discovered our little watery oasis? I was struck by how blue the undersides of the females were, along with a few other little blue 'fittings'. I never expected to see so many dragonflies active halfway through November.
